The Louvre Abu Dhabi is not just a museum it is one of the most architecturally extraordinary buildings in the world. Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel and sitting on the water of Saadiyat Island, its iconic perforated dome filters sunlight into thousands of shifting beams across the galleries below — a phenomenon the museum calls the "rain of light." Inside, 12 permanent galleries take you through 5,000 years of human art and civilization, with masterpieces on loan from 13 French institutions including the Louvre Paris. You do not need to be an art lover to be impressed by this place.

The Dome Rain of Light
Before you even go inside, the building itself is the experience. Jean Nouvel's 180-meter dome is made of 7,850 unique metal stars, each uniquely shaped and layered so sunlight passes through in a constantly shifting pattern across the white walkways and water below. It looks different every hour of the day.
12 Permanent Galleries
The permanent collection is organized chronologically across 12 galleries each a chapter in the story of humanity, from the earliest civilizations through to the modern era. The approach is deliberately universal rather than separating art by region or culture, galleries place works from different civilizations side by side to show shared themes across different corners of the world.
Rotating Temporary Exhibitions
Alongside the permanent collection, Louvre Abu Dhabi hosts major international temporary exhibitions throughout the year often featuring works brought in specifically from the Louvre Paris and other leading institutions. Check what is showing before you visit as the temporary exhibitions often rival the permanent galleries.
Outdoor Promenade & Waterfront
The museum grounds extend across a series of outdoor walkways and promenades directly above the Arabian Gulf. This is where the architecture fully reveals itself from outside — the floating dome, the reflections on the water, and the views across the Gulf are worth the visit on their own.
