Location: Lahbab Desert (Big Red) / Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Duration: 15 to 30 Minutes per session Skill Level: All levels beginners welcome Available: Daily, Morning & Evening Price: From AED 125 per person
Sandboarding is exactly what it sounds like a board strapped to your feet, a steep dune face in front of you, and nothing between you and the bottom but gravity and red sand. No lifts, no cables, no equipment more complicated than a flat board and a pair of bindings. You carry it up, you ride it down. Then you carry it up again. It is easy enough for children to do, fun enough that most adults end up going back for more runs than they planned, and one of the most accessible activities in the Dubai desert. Usually offered as part of a desert safari package, but available as a standalone experience too.

Sandboarding is a board sport where you ride a flat board down sand dunes. It shares mechanics with snowboarding the board is strapped to your feet with bindings and you use your body weight and foot pressure to steer and control speed but it happens on desert sand instead of snow, which means:
No lift. You carry the board up the dune yourself. This is part of the experience.
No poles. Just the board and your feet.
No special training. The technique is simpler than snowboarding because the sand absorbs speed.
You will fall. Repeatedly. That is normal, expected, and part of the fun. Sand is considerably softer than snow.
Most first-timers start lying prone on the board face forward, holding the nose and slide down that way before graduating to the standing position. Both are valid and enjoyable.
How to Sandboard First Timer's Guide
Standing position The classic. Feet strapped into bindings, knees bent, arms out for balance. Lean slightly forward and let gravity do the work. Steer by shifting your weight heel-side or toe-side. Easier than it looks on a gentler gradient, challenging and fast on a steeper face.
Prone position Lie face-down on the board, hold the front edge with both hands, and launch yourself forward. The fastest and most accessible way for beginners to get moving on the first run.
Sitting position Sit on the board and use your hands to push off the edge. The most stable for those who are unsure about standing. Gets fast quickly on the steeper faces.
Your guide will show you the technique at the top of the dune. There is no wrong way to start most people use the prone position for the first run and progress to standing within a few attempts.
The Dunes What to Expect at Lahbab
The Lahbab Desert dunes are the best in the Dubai area for sandboarding. The red sand is finer and faster than the beige sand closer to the city, and the dune faces are steeper giving more speed and a longer run than you would get at other desert locations.
- A typical dune face used for sandboarding is:
- Height: 15 to 40 meters from base to crest
- Angle: 25 to 40 degrees on the main face
- Ride time: 10 to 25 seconds per run depending on angle and starting position
- Carry time up: 3 to 5 minutes per climb
The red sand at Lahbab is also considerably easier on your clothing and skin than the rougher desert surfaces closer to the city it is fine-grained, soft, and oddly forgiving when you fall.
Sandboarding vs Snowboarding
People with snowboarding experience will find sandboarding easier at low speeds and harder at high speeds. The mechanics are similar weight distribution, edge control, turning but sand does not behave like packed snow. It is slower on the flat, faster on steep gradients, and does not hold an edge the way snow does. Wax on the base of the board helps. Your guide will wax the board before each run.
People without snowboarding experience will find sandboarding more accessible than snowboarding because the sand absorbs falls better and lower speeds are more achievable on gentler gradients.
Best Time for Sandboarding in Dubai
Morning (7:00 AM – 10:00 AM) The coolest slot. Sand is slightly firmer from the overnight temperature drop, making it faster. The soft morning light on the dunes is the best for photography. October to May this is the best all-round time.
Late Afternoon (4:00 PM – 6:30 PM) Popular as part of the evening desert safari. The light is dramatic and the sand warms up over the course of the afternoon. The climb is harder in the residual heat but the slide is fast.
Avoid: 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM from May to September extreme heat makes the climb genuinely uncomfortable and the sand on the surface too hot to handle.
